Alsónémedi is a town in Pest County, Hungary. The town is located on the right bank of the Danube, about 25 km north of Budapest. It has a population of 8,685 (2010).
The town was first mentioned in a document in 1237. In the 15th century it belonged to the estate of the Hunyadi family. In the 18th century it was the property of the Esterházy family. The town was badly damaged in the 1848-1849 Revolution and War of Independence.
In the 20th century the town was a major industrial center. It had a large chemical factory and a textile mill. The town was also an important railway junction.
The town was severely damaged in World War II. It was captured by the Soviet Army on January 1, 1945. After the war the town was rebuilt.
The chemical factory and the textile mill were closed in the 1990s. The railway junction was also closed. The town has now become a bedroom community for Budapest.
