It is the third most populous municipality of the island and the sixth of the Azores. The municipality includes the freguesias of Água de Pau, Ginetes, Lomba da Fazenda, Lomba da Maia, Nossa Senhora dos Remédios and Ponta Garça. Água de Pau is known for its thermal springs, which have been exploited since the Roman era. The municipality is also home to the Água de Pau Massif, the island’s highest point at 1,033 metres (3,389 ft).
