It is the seat of the canton of Saint-Laurent-en-Grandvaux, which consists of 14 communes. The commune has a population of about 1,700.

The village was founded in the 9th century by a monk named Laurentius. It was originally a small hamlet located on the pilgrimage route to the shrine of Saint James of Compostela in Spain. In the 12th century, a hospital and a church were built in the village. The church was named after Saint Laurentius.
