Adamsville was founded in 1832 by John Adams, for whom the town is named. It was incorporated in 1887.

The first coal mine in Adamsville was opened in 1873. The town became a major mining center in the early 20th century, with as many as 10,000 miners employed in the mines. Mining continued until the early 1970s, when the last mine in Adamsville closed.

The town has a number of historic buildings, including the Adamsville Public Library, which was built in 1908 with funds donated by Andrew Carnegie. The library is on the National Register of Historic Places.
