Adjuntas is a municipality in the mountainous central region of Puerto Rico, south of Utuado and Jayuya; east of Lares; and west of Yauco. It is about an hour’s drive from the coast. The name Adjuntas is a Taíno word meaning “the place of rest.”

The area of Adjuntas was part of the Cacique Mabodomoco’s yucayeque (chiefdom) and site of the important village of Coayllo. After the arrival of the Spanish in the 16th century, it became part of the Jayuya barrio of Lares. In 1815, it was separated from Lares and annexed to Yauco. In 1820 it was made a ward (barrio) of Yauco. In 1824 it was made a municipality, and in 1838 it was separated from Yauco and annexed to the new municipality of Utuado. In 1874 it was once again made a municipality.
