Alba de Cerrato is a municipality in the province of Palencia, in the autonomous community of Castile and León, Spain. The town is located on the left bank of the Cea River, and its average elevation is 467 metres (1,532 ft) above sea level. The municipality has a population of 3,349 (INE, 2018) and an area of 97.6 km² (37.8 mi²).
The town’s origins date back to the 9th century, when a monastery was founded here by the Count of Cerrato. The town grew up around the monastery, and in the 12th century it was granted a charter by Alfonso VII. The charter was confirmed by Alfonso VIII in 1208.
In the 13th century, the town was conquered by the Kingdom of Castile. It was later annexed to the Crown of Castile.
During the Middle Ages, the town was an important stop on the Pilgrims’ Road to Santiago de Compostela.
In the 15th century, the monastery was converted into a collegiate church.
In the 19th century, the town’s economy was based on agriculture and livestock.
