Alby-sur-Chéran is a commune in the Haute-Savoie department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in south-eastern France. The commune is located in the foothills of the Alps, about 10 km (6 mi) north of Annecy.
The name “Alby-sur-Chéran” is derived from the Latin word alba, meaning “white”, and the Gallo-Roman god Ceraunus.
The area around Alby-sur-Chéran has been inhabited since the Neolithic period. The first recorded mention of the town dates back to 932 AD, when it was known as Alba Curiana.
In the 12th century, the town was part of the Duchy of Savoy. It was later annexed by the County of Geneva.
Alby-sur-Chéran was part of the Savoyard province of Chablais, which was ceded to France in 1792 during the French Revolution.
The town is located on the left bank of the Chéran River, at an altitude of 446 m (1,463 ft).
