The city was originally settled in 1837 by Jacob Sammons, who built a log cabin on the site. The community was initially known as Sammonsville, but was later renamed Algonac after the Algonquian tribe that once inhabited the area. The first permanent European-American settler in the area was William Ferry, who established a ferry service across the St. Clair River in 1837. The city was incorporated in 1865.

Algonac is perhaps best known as the birthplace of Christopher Columbus Busch, a serial killer who murdered five people in the 1970s.
