Alhama de Aragón is a town and municipality located in the province of Zaragoza, Aragon, Spain. The name “Alhama” comes from the Arabic word for “castle” or “fortress”. The town is located on the left bank of the Gállego River, at the foot of the Moncayo mountains. It is the capital of the comarca of Alhama de Aragón.
The town was founded in the 9th century by the Moorish ruler of Zaragoza, Al-Hakam II. It was originally a small fortress located on a strategic hill overlooking the Gállego River. In the 11th century, the fortress was expanded and the town began to grow. During the Moorish period, Alhama was an important town, due to its location on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela.
After the Christian reconquest of Spain, the town was given to the Bishop of Zaragoza. In the 16th century, the bishopric was abolished and the town became a municipality.
