Altenberg bei Linz is a municipality in the district of Urfahr-Umgebung in the Austrian state of Upper Austria. It is located on the left bank of the river Danube, about 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) northwest of Linz.
The area of the municipality is 9.87 square kilometres (3.81 sq mi). Altenberg bei Linz borders on the municipalities of Asten, Leonding, Pasching and Traun.
The name “Altenberg” (“old mountain”) refers to the fact that the hill on which the castle is located is the oldest in the area.
The first mention of the castle is from 1139, when it was owned by the Bishop of Passau. In 1278, it came into the possession of the Duke of Austria, and it remained in the hands of the Habsburgs until 1918.
The castle was badly damaged in the Napoleonic Wars and was rebuilt in the Neo-Gothic style in the 19th century.
The municipality consists of the three Katastralgemeinden Altenberg, Kleinmünchen and Obermünchen.
