Alubijid was originally part of the municipality of Balingasag. It became a separate municipality on June 15, 1949 by virtue of Executive Order No. 258 issued by then President Elpidio Quirino.

The town is bounded by Balingasag on the north, east and south, and by the Gingoog Bay on the west.

The town has a land area of 8,119 hectares (20,090 acres).
