Aliwal North is a town in the Maloti-Drakensberg region of the Eastern Cape, South Africa. It is situated on the Orange River, about 70 km north of the border with Lesotho. The town is named after Sir Harry Smith, 1st Baronet of Aliwal on the Sutlej, who fought in the Anglo-Sikh wars. The area around Aliwal North was originally inhabited by the San people.
