Abucay is a municipality in the province of Bataan, Philippines. According to the 2015 census, it has a population of 41,803 people. Abucay is bordered by the towns of Samal to the north, Orani to the west, Hermosa to the southwest, and Balanga City to the south. It is about 66 kilometres (41 mi) from Manila.
The town was named after the native trees that used to abound in the area. The word abucay is from the Tagalog word abu, meaning “sad” or “mournful”, and the Spanish word cayo, meaning “key” or “small island”.
In 1607, the Augustinians founded the town of Abucay as a mission station. A wooden fort was built to protect the town from marauding pirates and Dutch invaders. The fort was destroyed in 1763 by the British forces during their occupation of the Philippines.
The town was rebuilt after the British occupation and became a municipality in 1848. During the Philippine Revolution of 1896, the town was the site of a battle between the revolutionary forces and the Spanish troops.
