Sélestat is a commune in the Grand Est region of north-eastern France. It is the capital of the Bas-Rhin department and the arrondissement of Sélestat-Erstein. The town is located on the Ill River, 15 kilometres (9.3 miles) south of Strasbourg and 50 kilometres (31 miles) north-west of Colmar.
Sélestat was founded in the 12th century by the bishop of Strasbourg, Otto of Weissenburg. The town’s name, first recorded in 1217 as Selestatis, is of Germanic origin and probably means “settlement on the river Seille”. The town grew rapidly in the 13th century and became a prosperous commercial center. It was besieged and captured by the troops of Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, in 1525 during the Peasants’ War.
In 1789, Sélestat was the seat of the first district court of the Bas-Rhin département. The town was badly damaged by fire in 1871 but was rebuilt and expanded in the following years.
