Afgooye is a city in the northwestern Somalian region of Somalia. The city is located on the Shebelle River, about 30 kilometres (19 mi) southwest of Mogadishu. Afgooye is the capital of the Afgooye District. As of 2016, the city had a population of around 30,000 inhabitants.
The town of Afgooye was founded in the early 18th century. It later served as a rest stop for caravans travelling between Mogadishu and the interior of Somalia. Afgooye was also a key trading post for livestock, particularly camels.
In the late 19th century, Afgooye was ruled by the Geledi Sultanate. The kingdom’s influence extended from the Shebelle River valley to the Juba River valley. The Geledi Sultanate was eventually toppled by the Italian colonial empire in the early 20th century.
During the Ogaden War (1977-1978), Afgooye was one of the main battlefronts between the Somali Army and the Ethiopian Army. The city was also heavily damaged during the Somali Civil War (1991-1992). In the 2010s, Afgooye began to rebuild and redevelop.
