Saint-Just-la-Pendue is a commune in the Loire department in central France. It is located in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. The commune is situated on the right bank of the Rhône, about 30 km north of Lyon. It is the capital of the Saint-Just-la-Pendue canton, which comprises 17 communes and has a population of about 33,000.
The town of Saint-Just-la-Pendue was founded in the 11th century. It was originally a small village located on the site of a Roman villa. In the 13th century, the village was destroyed by the troops of Louis IX during the Albigensian Crusade. The town was rebuilt and became a prosperous market town.
During the French Revolution, the town was renamed Saint-Just-la-Pendue in 1793 in honor of Jean-Paul Marat, who was born in the town. Marat was a journalist and political leader during the Revolution. He was assassinated in 1793 by Charlotte Corday.
