Alsunga is a town in Latvia, located in the historical region of Courland. It is the administrative center of the Alsunga municipality. The town has a population of 1,096 (2010).
Alsunga is first mentioned in a 1578 document, when it was part of the Duchy of Courland and Semigallia. In the 17th century, Alsunga was a major center of the Courland witch trials. Twenty-nine people were accused of witchcraft and burned at the stake in Alsunga.
During the 18th century, Alsunga was a regional center of trade and crafts. In 1762, the town was destroyed by fire. In the 19th century, Alsunga was a center of the Baltic German community in Courland.
In 1915, during World War I, Alsunga was occupied by German troops. In 1918, it became part of the newly independent Latvia. During the Latvian War of Independence (1918-1920), Alsunga was occupied by German and Bolshevik troops. In 1920, it was recaptured by Latvian troops.
