The village was founded in the 7th century by the monk Sergius. In the 10th century, it was destroyed by the Saracens but was later rebuilt. Septème was once part of the Lordship of Beauvoisin.
The Château de Septème, built in the 14th century, was the seat of the lords of Septème. It was later acquired by the city of Marseille. The château is now a private residence.
The village is home to the Chapel of Notre-Dame-de-Pitié, built in the 16th century. The chapel contains the tomb of Antoine de la Roche, lord of Septème.
