The commune of Serris was created on 1 January 1974 by the merger of the communes of Montseron and Toussus-le-Noble. The name of Serris was chosen to replace the name of Toussus-le-Noble, which was considered to be too noble sounding for a commune in the suburbs of Paris.
The village of Serris is located on the left bank of the river Seine, in the eastern part of the Île-de-France region. The river forms the boundary between the communes of Serris and of Chessy, to the south of Serris.
