The village is located 7 miles (11 km) southwest of Arras, at the junction of the D33, D937 and D938 roads. The A1 autoroute passes through the commune.

Wailly was the headquarters of the British Army in France during World War I.

The village was completely destroyed during the Battle of Arras in 1917. It was rebuilt after the war.
